It all began with that famous circus show that opened at a carnival in our locality and to much of our delight we went over there to catch a show along with my two sons. But I was not at all prepared for the events following it.

Well, my otherwise quiet home was transformed into a circus itself; my two young sons-- one aged four years and the other two years-suddenly started to show an exceptional affinity towards jumping on everything that displayed a spring action. The mattress in the master bedroom came to the verge of breaking down. Their own baby cots were almost gone. They did not even spare our newly bought sofa in the living room and just before I turned completely lunatic, Paul, my husband suggested a purchase of Trampoline, that could possibly better handle the little ones' jumping spree.

And thank God, it did. My two little acrobats found the trampoline, to my utter relief, a much better option to brush up with their jumping skills. And since then the trampoline has become an inseparable part of our family.

First of all, never allow your children making tricks with the trampoline without the supervision of a responsible adult.

Don't try any complex tricks like somersaulting; if you are not trained in this particular trick and landing on your head or neck, it may cause serious injury to the point of death or paralysis.

Placing of the trampoline is very important. Place it in an area that is away from any kind of structures. Do not forget to place shock-absorbent material on the ground around the trampoline. Every time your child is climbing on it, inspect it thoroughly. Make sure of the placing of the frame padding before each use. Never make delay in replacing any damaged or missing parts.

Teach your child to Climb on and off the trampoline. Never allow him to jump straight from the trampoline to the floor: it is dangerous. Also see to it that your child does not learn to use the trampoline as a springboard to other objects.

Never allow the child to jump too high at the very beginning. Encourage him to bounce low as long as he does not acquire the basic control and become capable of consistently land in the center of the trampoline. So control first and then height.

It is important to teach your child the limit. Do not allow him to jump for too long and the moment you feel he is looking tired, instruct him to discontinue with the bouncing. Also do not allow more than one person on the trampoline at a time.

You can see, trampoline is like any other sports where you have to follow certain minimum level of safety rules. So follow the rules and be on the safe side. If you use the trampoline properly it proves to be wonderful experience for all ages.

Learn Tricks For The Trampoline

Bouncing up and down on a trampoline is fun, but if you have children who are the least bit adventurous, they'll soon be trying to do quite a bit more than that and will want to learn some tricks for the trampoline to add to their fun. However, while doing simple tricks properly can be fairly safe, fooling around and trying to push the envelope can be a bit dangerous. Be sure your children know the proper way to do tricks and know how to be safe while they bounce before you allow them to do any tricks on your new trampoline.

First, make sure anyone using the trampoline knows how to jump up and down and land back near the center each time. This practice time won't be wasted. Jumping on trampolines is one of the best ways to strengthen muscles and organs, especially the cardio-vascular system. The additional flexibility, balance and coordination will help your children perform any of these simple trampoline tricks more easily and safely.

The first trick you should teach your little jumping beans is to land on their backs. Have them stand on the trampoline without moving. Their arms should remain at their sides. Then, they will need to fall straight backwards onto the trampoline bed, keeping their heads up. As their backs connect with the trampoline, they should be sure they don't jerk their heads around, since they could pull some muscles if they do. They should allow their heads to meet the mat naturally instead. After their backs meet the trampoline bed, they will rebound back to their feet. Make sure they practice several times before they try to move on to the next trick. If they seem bored by the trick and want to try something else, suggest that they try to bounce a bit higher.

Once everyone has mastered the back flop, it is time to try landing on your knees instead of your feet. You should start the trick the same way, remembering to be careful not to jerk your neck around as you fall back onto the trampoline bed. As you bounce back up, land on your knees and then rock back down. You can keep rocking up and back almost indefinately.

There are many other tricks you can try, but they are more risky and should only be done if you are very experienced with using the trampoline to bounce and you have mastered the simpler tricks. One of the more complicated tricks you can try is a somersault or flip. You can do these tricks backwards and forwards, but be sure you stay safe. Practice all of the same precautions you would observe if you were on the ground, such as tucking your head and protecting your neck properly.

Finally, remember that any trick is less safe than simply bouncing. Before you begin a trick, make sure you are not too close to anyone else and that there is plenty of room for you to bounce where you didn't plan to land. Also, be sure you don't hold your neck stiffly or jerk your head abruptly as you do tricks. The best trick is always one that ends safely.

There are two main types of trampoline – recreational and competitive. Both these types may be circular, octagonal or rectangular in shape. Since recreational trampolines are designed for home use, they are typically less strongly built than competitive types. That is why extra care should be taken when using recreational trampolines, such as regular maintenance and repair for tears, rust, and detachments.

Brief History of Trampoline Jumping:

In the early 20th century, “bouncing beds” were used by certain stage acts to entertain audiences, which is considered as the first known trampoline jumping in history, because the “beds” they used were strikingly similar to the trampoline we know today. Eskimos are also known to have used Walrus skin to toss each other up into the air before the modern trampoline was born.

George Nissen, a gymnast and competitive diver, and a friend, Larry Griswold designed and built the first modern trampoline in 1934. Advanced Trampolining Stunts Explained

As your skill in trampolining increases, you'll want to add more difficult stunts to your routines.

While you're learning these advanced stunts, protect yourself by using a safety belt, or have a spotter guide you. One of the most basic is the front somersault.

Learn it step by step. Begin with a simple lead-up stunt - a forward roll from a squat stand. Practice it a few times from a still position.

Then go through it from a slight bounce. Gradually add more bounce until you can do the forward roll in the air without letting your hands touch the bed.

And in a while you should be ready to go into a fuller lead-up to the front somersault - the knee drop front somersault to seat drop. From a standing bounce, land in a knee drop.

As you bounce up, flip forward, grabbing your shins while you duck your head. When your legs start to spin underneath you again...pull out of the tuck and land in a seat drop. Work on the timing of your spin until you hit the bed evenly every time. Then try it landing on your feet.

Now you can go on to the complete front somersault from a standing bounce. After bouncing off your feet, try to stay in your spin just a little longer so you will land back on your feet. Start with a regular bounce.

As you come up, grab your shins and go into a tight tuck. Your body spins faster in tuck position, making it easier to complete a somersault. When your legs are almost under you...pull out of the tuck and land on your feet, flexing your knees to help kill your spin. Always try to land near the same spot from which you started. That's the key to good somersaulting, whether it's forward...or backward, as in the back pullover. A complete stunt in itself, the back pullover is also a good lead-up to the back somersault.

Start the back pullover with a regular bounce, landing on the lower part of your back, your hands under your thighs.

Coming up from your bounce, pull back hard on your thighs, this starts you into a back pullover somersault that you continue...until your feet touch the bed. Then straighten up and land standing. After you learn the timing for a back pullover...you can try a complete back somersault... adding a little extra bounce so your spin will carry you all the way around to your feet again.

As you take off from the bed, straighten your body while lifting your arms and keeping your head back.

Then bring your knees up so your hands grasp your shins, pulling you into a tuck position. Spin through your somersault, and when your legs are almost under you again...straighten out and land on your feet. Work on the back somersault until you can safely do it without a spotter or belt.

Then you can go on to a little more difficult stunt...the barani. In the barani you start a front somersault, do a half-twist in mid air, and land on the bed facing in the opposite direction. But before trying a barani from a stand...lead up to it with a knee barani, using your hands. In this stunt, you go from a knee bounce into a half-twist and land on your knees in the opposite direction.

Start it with a knee drop landing. Keep your arms raised overhead, ready to place them on the bed. From the knee landing...bounce forward into a handstand position, kicking your legs overhead and keeping your arms straight. From the handstand, give yourself a half-twist... so your legs carry you on over and you land on your knees again, facing the other way.

After practicing it a few more times, you should be able to do the complete knee barani without letting your hands touch the bed.

There are many more advanced stunts, none of which can be learned over night. But by practicing them gradually and regularly, you'll find you can become a good trampoline performer and a valuable member of your gymnastic team.
